Doug Barrera directs the Civic Engagement minor and the Astin Civic Engagement Research program, teaches classes in the Civic Engagement subject area, manages AmeriCorps programs, and conducts research and assessment for the UCLA Center for Community Learning. Doug is currently exploring how student critical consciousness development emerges through different models of community-based learning. He has published on student development through service learning, motivations for community-campus partnerships, and democratic practice in higher education. He serves on the editorial board for Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice. Doug is a native of San Diego, and was formerly adjunct faculty at the University of San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of California Los Angeles.
