Megan's career has centered on institutional efforts to expand higher education and K-12 service engagement, including supporting the launch of AmeriCorps in California. She leads communication, outreach, and fundraising strategy for Stanford University's civic action plan called Cardinal Service. Before returning to the Haas Center full-time in 2007, Megan led the Haas Center's Call to Serve government recruitment initiative and worked with the City of Palo Alto City Manager's Office on planning for libraries and a possible pandemic flu. She also served as nonprofits liaison for State Assemblyman Joe Simitian and for 10 years hosted Senator Simitian's monthly government access television show, Capitol Focus. Her professional experience includes City of Palo Alto teen coordinator, Constitutional Rights Foundation project director, Youth Community Service founder, Haas Center for Public Service assistant director, Youth Service California executive director, and outreach coordinator for the Service Learning 2000 Center in the Stanford School of Education. She also worked as an independent consultant supporting nonprofits with event planning, fund development, and publications. Current community involvement includes an appointment to the PAUSD Parcel Tax Oversight Committee, and advisory and board roles with Foundation for a College Education, First Congregational Church Nursery School, League of Women Voters Palo Alto, and Palo Alto Partners in Education. Megan has also served as a community volunteer with Adolescent Counseling Services, Palo Alto Community Child Care, Palo Alto Community Fund, Leadership Mid-Peninsula, Family Resource Center Implementation Team, City of Palo Alto Comprehensive Plan Committee, Mothers' Symposium, Youth Community Service, Partners in School Innovation, and YWCA of the Mid-Peninsula. She has also been involved with local youth sports teams, Girl Scouts, parent associations, and political campaigns. Megan was recognized in 2008 with the Palo Alto Tall Tree Award for Outstanding Citizen/Volunteer; and in 2013 with the Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Outstanding Service to Undergraduate Education and the Margaret Ann Fidler Award for Distinguished Service to Student Affairs. In 2014, she was recognized by the California Governor's Office as a Service Trailblazer for AmeriCorps first 20 years. This year Megan helped create a campus-wide effort to increase voter registration and turnout. Since 2014, Stanford's Haas Center for Public Service has been building a networked approach to fully embed service into the campus culture. StanfordVotes.org efforts emerged from a practice focused on expanding knowledge and collaboration on common goals (be more than the sum of our parts); building and sharing resources, and mobilizing action. This non-partisan effort was not about creating something new, but building and bridging what exists, using the strengths and power of faculty and students towards the co-creation of a new understanding of the importance of voting to our democracy.
