Maria Timmons Flores

Western Washington University
Executive Director Compass 2 Campus
Bellingham WA
María Timmons Flores is an Professor in the ELL / Bilingual Education Program at Western Washington University. She directs the BRIDGES project and Pathways to Teaching, both designed to support (im)migrant and bilingual students to succeed in school and consider careers in education. Both programs feature culturally sustainable and critical approaches; valuing language and culture as a human right as well as understanding and pushing back against systemic barriers that limit academic and life opportunities. She has worked in a consulting role with Recruiting Washington Teachers (RWT) High School Teacher Academies for 8 years and co-authored the new RWT – CIE curriculum with experienced RWT teacher, Michael Sampson. All of these initiatives align to provide student centered pathways to teaching with the goal of developing teachers who reflect the diversity of the communities in which they will work.

This session focuses on a new initiative; SEED (Secondary Education for Equity and Diversity) that prepares working para-educators to earn certification in secondary content areas and ESOL. SEED is currently piloting a Teacher Corps model employing College Access Corps positions to recruit and support aspiring educators and / or community workers who have deep connections in multilingual / multicultural communities. The CAC positions provide unique benefits to first generation teacher candidates in the Alternative Route to Certification program: financial, relational, cultural, social, academic, and professional. The CAC role and responsibilities also highlight and affirm the strengths SEED candidates bring from their life and professional experiences to teaching. The CAC positions provide opportunities for leadership and agency, alongside a year long residency in learning to teach.
