Kendra Dyanne Rivera

California State University San Marcos
Associate Professor
An Associate Professor of Communication at Cal State San Marcos, Dr. Rivera has engaged in extensive research with everyone from the U.S. Border Patrol to a community health clinic, in order to understand how communication can both shape and reflect overall health and wellness. A study she co-authored, "How to Bust the Office Bully," has become a resource for multiple organizations and victims of bullying worldwide. Some of her most recent research puts the spotlight on the classroom, exploring how students' talk (reflection) about their service learning experiences reveals and impacts their overall life-goals, cultural intelligence, and feelings of self-worth.

“I’m interested in helping to solve critical problems faced by marginalized populations,” she says. “In particular, I’m interested in how to make our organizational experiences healthier and less stressful – be it work, the doctor’s office, the classroom or whatever.”

Dr. Rivera has served as CSUSM’s Faculty Director for Service Learning, and is currently the Faculty Fellow for the Faculty Mentoring Program.

“My greatest accomplishment in the academic world are my students,” said Dr. Rivera, who has earned the CSUSM President’s Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching Innovation & Excellence and the Dean’s Teaching Innovation Award, among others. “I’m proud of all the former students who have gone on to work in nonprofit or justice-oriented workplaces, where they will be giving back to their communities.”
